Emily King – Euro tour

Here – The SUP HUT’s very own Starboard sponsored shop rider Emily King reports on the recent SUP racing event on in Carbis bay, St Ives –  part of the euro tour.
The show had come to town! Seas were blue and calm, paddlers were chatting and relaxed, what better way to spend time than racing in this!

Oh boy we were in for a shock! The weather soon took a turn with the winds picking up steadily and cold grey skies menacing with rain as we prepared mentally and physically.
Check out the start of the race here

As the weather changed it added to the building drama as 40 pro and leisure British and International paddlers lined up for a 12k beach start for 12’6 and 14′ SUP race. The line up included many members of the starboard national and international team including Connor Baxter and Fiona Wilde.
The waves were pushing in and the chop was going to be heavy going. I lined up with my board waiting for the shout! Go go go…. All manner of boards, paddles and people flew into the sea trying desperately to hold their line and pick up the pace! I had a rider right on me, handicapping me from being able to drive my paddle into the water establishing my rhythm. It was a slow and wobbly start dealing with the wake caused by the lead pack!
The first buoy turn was carnage as riders tried to take their line and gain ground. I pulled round and found my rhythm, going hard into a head wind. The course was three gruelling laps of 4km. The main long back stretch gave us some down wind action. I’d was on a starboard sprint. It’s a fast flat water board but theses conditions meant I had to work hard to keep it balanced as the cross chop tried to take me off line. The run heading back to the end of lap one was a true test of upwind endurance, digging deep and driving forwards. I worked supper hard monitoring my performance to keep a steady pace during the race. It was paying off as I was able to overtake some male riders and maintain my position throughout!
As I came into the last turn I dug deep and took one final rider using the bumps and glides to get to the finish with a short run up the beach. Finished! 12’6 and second! Well I can tell you I worked every second and pushed deep to get there! Well done to all those who came, conquered and enjoyed! Oh and of course to Ocean Sports for running an amazing Euro tour event!
