Flat water spots
So you’re new to Stand up Paddling and had the first lesson or two and you feel hooked , however the idea of trying to figure out when is best to tame the oceans tides and waves scares you.
All you want to do is a bit of fitness/ touring exercise on your SUP board on flatter calmer water.
Well here at ‘stand up Paddle Gower’ – South Wales premier Stand up paddling service we’ve done all the hard work for you and put together this guide to help steer you in the direction of some fantastic flat water – protected inland and river paddles.
There are some great accessible waterways for SUP within south wales its just knowing where to access them.
We’ll go through a few locations which are relatively easy to access , and then a few which may need you to use your initiative to get to.
Remember we urge you to follow these 4 safety precautions
We’ll start with Swansea’s River Tawe
In and around Swansea the most easy body of water to paddle on is the River Tawe.
You’ll want to take a look at your entry and exit points and the flow of the river first , but you’re not exactly going to be blown or taken anywhere where you can’t get yourself out of.
Its a mild flowing river (unless its been raining ) and the easiest access point is down where the river meets the sea – specifically the Sub aqua slipway which is situated very close to the sail bridge there is also a large pay and display car park right next to the access point.
From entering the water you can chose to paddle under the pedestrian footbridge which leads on the pontoons or paddle around the boats and then back up the river and under the sail bridge …you’ll soon be out of sight and enjoying the river Tawe river as its gently meanders up towards the Liberty stadium.
