Mauritius SUP

Mauritius an island of Paradise and not a bad place to SUP either.
With a flight time over just over 11 hours its a long haul direct but you can fly via Abu dhabi / Dubai which brakes the journey, there is a growing SUP scene in the Emirates too !

Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean 800km east of Madagascar and 2,000km off the closest point on the African coast. Mauritius is an old volcanic island and is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs, forming natural, crystal clear lagoons ideal for SUP.

The Indian ocean island is given trade winds from the Southeast for much of the year winter on Mauritius is from June to September; this is when the trade winds are at their best, but even in the remaining months of the year, the trade winds still offer Windsurfers / Kitesurfers excellent conditions. From December to April, relatively heavy rain showers can be expected but they usually blow over quickly.

During our 2 week stay (Late April – May) we were in a wind drought period, which to my luck brought about the best possible conditions as I had decided to take out my SUP and not my kiting gear !

There are paddling spots all over the island from Grand bay in the North to Isle du Cerf on the eastside and anywhere which looks suitable.
However a word of warning – The island is surrounded by reefs which is great in theory, but all the water entering the lagoons has to escape somewhere, so be careful of powerful rips and undercurrents even in the most tranquil picturesque of spots which look as flat as a pancake, There could be a 5 Knot current as we discovered at one spot !

We spent most of our time SUP surfing the islands southwest area’s from Gris gris to Le Mourne (A nipple of land on the southwest corner of the island).
There is a Club mistral at Le Mourne which rents out the full range of Fanatic stand up paddleboardsif you dont want to take your own SUP.
For the Wavehunters among you from Le Mourne to Gris Gris on the southern coast there are some awesome spots which look perfect and worth a trip, the best way is to hire a car (1000rupees a day = 20GBP)
Our time there offered us 28 degree water which was divine and the water temp does’nt drop below 25.
The surf ranged from 2ft – 10ft + on some days but you can choose the more exposed reefs or the slightly more protected ones for a mellower wave – its not all take off and pull in like you may think !
The water clarity is insane just looking down on a flat water paddle can be just as interesting as snorkeling

A great trip and an island paddling paradise…..Matt out .
