BC Interest in SUP

The new SUP working group met for the first time on Monday 5 th February. A great breadth of
representation from the sport including those with interests in flat water, surf, white water and yoga
and bringing experience from outdoor activity centres, communications, working with older
paddlers, water safety and rescue, sports development, retail, event development and event
delivery (competition and recreation).
The priorities for the group could be very broad so an initial conversation about how best to focus
the groups time took place. Some of the areas discussed included:
Safety guidance and advice around equipment particularly for those paddlers coming into
SUP with no experience of watersports.
Suggestions around mapping events (competition and recreation) and looking at how this
information could be publicised centrally
Clarity for paddlers showing the pathways to move through the sport, whether that’s within
recreation or competition, moving from recreation to competition, or moving into
instructing and leading.
Its clear there is loads of great work going on in the SUP community so there is no desire to reinvent
the wheel! The group is writing a terms of reference document which will help define the purpose
and aims and keep us on track. We’ll share that document when it’s ready.

The Technical Group are currently writing the Course descriptors (summaries) for the content of the
Surf award, the Open Ocean Award and the Sheltered Water award. Once the technical group
receives the core “Ready To Ride” award we will amend it and oversee it’s linear progression to and
from the other awards. The process will be to trail, then publish and we anticipate delivery to be
later this year.
The Technical group are keen to move on to Whitewater Advanced Surf and Guide Awards soon
after.
We will only undertake that once we have established quality within the first set of awards and
modified as necessary.
The process has been challenging, as not only are many of those on the technical committee from
outside BC, but that the awards themselves have to be written within the new BC coaching
framework fitting it where we can and deviating from it where necessary.
SO if you’re eagerly awaiting an outcome be assured we are working to make sure its a good one
delivered in a timely fascia with quality at its heart.
The new awards website provides a great window for the award and coaching structures. see:
