Fanatic 9’6 Allwave review

Steve from Scotland talks us through his recent purchase of a Fanatic 9’2 Allwave.

Review – Fanatic Allwave 9ft 6 – Steve Williams

About the surfer – I’m about 14.5 stone with wettie on and have about 5 years prone surfing behind me and nearly one year’s SUP surfing.

I was after a board with volume, stability but which could really help me get SUP surfing to a pretty good level without making it too difficult – nothing worse than having a board that is too frustratingly difficult!

This is not a high performance slash and go vertical SUP but for someone who gets out 3 or 4 times a month and has some surfing ability it is a great choice to progress with.

On a wave it turns REALLY well without needing to have the foot right back on the tail. The tail is pulled in well though and the swallow tail loosens it up a bit more. The hull is really well thought out and the pronounced vee really helps the board from rail to rail.

The nose is a great shape too…..plenty kick which means it takes later drops no problem – just paddle and you are down the face. But, to be honest, with all that volume you can get into a wave quite early. Now here’s the big but welcome surprise….there’s a concave right at the tip of the nose which makes getting those low down five toes on the nose really really easy…will go for the ten toes next time. It is more stable on the nose than my 12ft longboard shape SUP….go figure that one!

The construction seems good and the deck pad grippy but I always put wax on my SUPs regardless – I like to be rock solid.

As for cons……..my only gripe is the grab handle is not quite centred and in really choppy stuff it would nice to have deeper fins but you get used to that as the board is more stable than most.

I had this board out in chest to shoulder high clean groundswell surf the other day and had one of the best surf days in the last five year. I was way further out back than the other prone surfers and was catching nearly everything I went for – great paddling into big walls with no-one but yourself. I had a ball and surfed really well on the board. Came away with that buzz that keeps you going for a week!

Thanks Steve !
