HOW EASY IS SUP ?!

A friend who recently bought a SUP board recounts his entry into Surfing and then SUP with overwhelming results !

A surfing epiphany… A very average surfer moving over to riding SUP

I’ve never been much of a surfer but I’ve persisted since I got my first 7’4”minimal in 2004, I’ve got a bit better and have had loads of very memorable sessions but they were literally blown out of the water (cliché I know) when I caught my first proper waves on an SUP!
Last week I was driving back to Cardiff from an evening SUP surf session in Porthcawl and it struck me that I’d just successfully surfed some of the biggest waves of my life. They were small by most surfer’s standards, probably about 4ft, and I’d been out in bigger waves before on a surfboard but the difference was I felt like I absolutely nailed surfing these waves! Something I’d never been able to say before.*
The difference was I had time to think. My 10ft Fanatic Fly, caught the waves with ease and then gave me the half second I needed to think as it was picking up speed. Should I go for a bottom turn and then cruise along right? Or shall I just go for it, go full speed along the face leaning right into the wave and then react to the wave as it changes? In fact I could do both just by moving my weight with a quick step forward or back on the board and this was only my second session on this board and one of only 5-6 sessions ever SUP surfing. I finally felt I had control on the wave.
The other big difference was that it was less than perfect conditions with strong cross shore winds but I could still get ‘out back’ consistently thanks to the extra speed and stability of the board and an SUP paddle. This is something that I’d struggled with for so long; exhausting myself on a standard surfboard before I’d caught a single wave, meaning I was missing great waves just because of my paddling ability.
There are many traditional surfers who are critics of SUP but the whole point for me is catching waves and an SUP board makes me feel like more of a surfer than I’ve ever felt. This is despite years of trying to get that same feeling on normal surfboards. I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to go back!
*I must add that me saying that I ‘nailed’ a wave has no relevance to the reality… I probably looked terrible but I don’t give a crap… it felt good to me!
